Overview
The dual degree program confers the Master of Science (M.S.) degree from the School of Natural Resources and Environment and the Master of Public Policy (M.P.P.) degree from the School of Public Policy. The program provides students with the analytical skills, scientific foundation, and socio-behavioral understanding needed to become effective environmental and natural resources policy practitioners. The dual degree program produces graduates well trained in advanced analytic methods and policy processes, and well informed on the structure, functioning, and management of environmental problems.

How to Apply
Rackham Graduate School Guidelines allow dual degree students to double count one sixth of the total credits normally required to complete both programs. Students may integrate the 48-credit-hour M.P.P program with the 42-credit-hour M.S. program (totaling 90-credit-hours) into a 75-credit-hour/three year program, with 15 credits double-counted. The student must still meet all the basic requirements of each program, which are summarized below.
School of Natural Resources and Environment Requirements
- At least 25 NRE credits
- Fulfill field of study core and the NRE core course requirements
- Two analytics courses (one may need to be statistics)
- Integrative master’s opus
School of Public policy (SPP) Requirements
- At least 33 SPP credits
- SPP 529 Statistics (Fulfills NRE Analytics/Statistics requirement. NRE 538 fulfills SPP requirement.)
- SPP 555 Microeconomics (Fulfills NRE Microeconomics 570. NRE 570 fulfills SPP requirement.)
- SPP 573 Benefit-Cost Analysis (Fulfills NRE Analytics requirement.)
- SPP 580 Values, Ethics, and Public Policy
- SPP 585 Political Environment of Policy Analysis or SPP 560 Foreign Policy (SPP 585 fulfills NRE 562 requirement. NRE 562 fulfills SPP requirement.)
- SPP 587 Public Management
- Ten week public-sector internship (Written work might be reformulated to fulfill NRE master’s opus requirement. Likewise, NRE master’s opus might be used to fulfill SPP internship requirement.)

Students must meet the admissions standards of and be admitted by both units.
If the student is currently enrolled in one program she/he must complete the "Readmission, Dual Degree, Change of Field Information and Application" form and submit it with the other application documents. Before graduation, form 6010 — Dual Degree Course Elections must be completed to verify completion of requirements and minimum hours.
