APPAM 2008-09 Dissertation Award

Funding Abstract:

The Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) seeks to recognize emergent scholars in the field of public policy and management by presenting an award for the best Ph.D. dissertation in public policy and management.
Winners receive a cash award in the amount of $1,000 in addition to a plaque, recognition at the annual APPAM fall research conference, and publication of an abstract in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management. A separate grant covering travel costs to the fall conference also will be provided. The award winner, and two honorable mentions, will be given an opportunity to display posters of their dissertations during the research conference.

Wildlife Research Grants

The American Wildlife Conservation Foundation funds projects that aid in the formulation and establishment of sound policies and practices designed to conserve, protect, restore, and perpetuate forests, wildlife, scenic and recreational areas in North America with special regard to New York. In the past 25 years, more than 100 projects have been undertaken on topics such as controlled burning, development of acid tolerant trout strains, and the study of nesting requirements of the wild turkey.

Ice Mountain Environmental Stewardship Fund (IMESF)

In 2002, through the generosity of Great Spring Waters of America, Inc., the Ice Mountain Environmental Stewardship Fund (IMESF) was established at the Foundation to provide up to $50,000 per year for ten years for grantmaking.  Grants from the IMESF will be made for the following purpose: To support the waters and water-dependent natural resources of the Muskegon River Watershed by supporting conservation, enhancement, and restoration projects that will result in improvements to the physical, chemical, and biological integrity of the watershed.

SBE Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant

Funding Abstract:

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), and Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field and archival research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Funds may be used for valid research expenses which include, but are not limited to, conducting field research in settings away from campus that would not otherwise be possible, data collection and sample survey costs, payments to subjects or informants, specialized research equipment, analysis and services not otherwise available, supplies, travel to archives, travel to specialized collections and facilities or field research locations, and partial living expenses for conducting necessary research away from the student's university.

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), is a division of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and maintains research faculities for marine and terrestrial research at various locations on the Isthmus of Panama.  Short term fellowships (STF) are available for research in the areas of ecology, anthropology, paleontology, paleocology, evolutionary biology, molecular phylogenetics, biogeography, animal behavior, neurobiology, soils sciences, and physiology of tropical plants and animals.

Funding Abstract:

For graduate study or research abroad in academic fields and for professional training in the creative and performing arts. Purpose is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the US and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.
Applicants will be considered for all awards to the country of application that are appropriate to the applicant's qualifications and objectives, and for which the applicant is eligible. There is a single application form for all grants described below:
Fulbright Full Grants
These grants generally provide round-trip transportation; language or orientation courses, where appropriate; tuition, in some cases; book and research allowances; maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; and supplemental health and accident insurance.
Fulbright Travel Grants
Travel grants are available only to Germany, Hungary, or Italy. Travel grants provide roundtrip transportation and are available to supplement an award from a non-IIE fellowship that does not provide funds for travel, or to supplement a student's own funds for study.
Foreign and Private Grants
Specific benefits and requirements of grants offered by foreign governments, universities, and private donors are listed in the Individual Country Summaries in the official IIE Fulbright Program Book.
Teaching Assistantships
Opportunities are available in Argentina, Belgium/Luxembourg, Chile, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Korea, Romania, Taiwan, and Turkey.

These grants generally provide round-trip transportation; book and research allowances; maintenance for the academic year, based on living costs in the host country; supplemental health and accident insurance; tuition, in some cases; and language or orientation courses, where appropriate. Comprehensive Fulbright grants are payable in local currency or U.S. dollars, depending on the country of assignment.

SOPHE/ATSDR Student Fellowship in Environmental Health Promotion

Academic Achievement Award

Funding Abstract:

The Academic Achievement Award encourages academic excellence by recognizing contributions to the field of public water supply. All Masters theses and doctoral dissertations that are relevant to the water supply industry are eligible. The manuscript must reflect the work of a single author and be submitted during the competition year in which it was submitted for the degree.
Entries are considered by a panel of judges (Academic Achievement Award Committee) appointed by the American Water Works Association, and are evaluated on the basis of originality, practical application, value to the water supply field, potential value as a reference, and overall clarity.

Fellowships for Graduate Students in Wildlife Ecology and Related Areas

Funding Abstract:

Currently the Foundation supports 10 to 12 graduate students each year under its fellowship program.  The scientific breadth of the research scholarship program includes the following academic units: animal behavior, biology, botany, conservation education, ecology, mammalogy, ornithology, parasitology, range science, veterinary pathology, and wildlife sciences.
Proposals are ranked in the following order of descending priority:
1. Studies already in progress which need to be extended into or through the coming year.
2. New studies initiated on the Foundation's Refuge.
3. Proposals concerning problems or species on which we previously worked or in which we have special interest because of its relationship to our research. These normally are within a reasonable radius of our locality and most of them are restricted to south Texas.

Graham Environmental Sustainability Doctoral Fellowship

Funding Abstract:

The overarching goal of the Graham Doctoral Fellowship Program (DFP) is to create a cohort of doctoral students who will ultimately engage in leadership roles within academia, industry, and government.  Each year, the Graham Insitute competitively selets and admits 6 doctoral candidates into the Graham Doctoral Fellowship Program.  The group will be selected to represent a broad balance ofinterests in enhance the interdisciplinary aspect of the collaboration.  Each Fellow receives $25,000 per year for two years to help support their doctoral-level research and studies.  Match support is required from the home department.  Applicants are reviewed by a strict set of criteria and considered only if their doctoral research project is related to environmental sustainability.

Grants-In-Aid Program

Funding Abstract:

The SPSSI Committee on Grants-in-Aid (GIA) wishes to support scientific research in social problem areas related to the basic interests and goals of SPSSI and particularly those that are not likely to receive support from traditional sources. The Committee especially encourages proposals involving (a) unique and timely research opportunities, (b) underrepresented institutions, graduate students, and junior scholars, (c) volunteer research teams, and (d) actual, not pilot, projects.   Funding up to $1,000 is available for graduate student research, with strong preference given to applications from students at the dissertation stage of the graduate career. Such proposals must be accompanied by an appropriate official university agreement to match the amount requested. This matching requirement will not be waived. Funding up to $2,000 is available for research by SPSSI members who already have a Ph.D.  Documentation of submission to the applicant's Institution IRB must accompany every submission. In exceptional circumstances the amount may exceed $2,000. The usual grant from SPSSI is for up to $2,000 for post-doctoral work and up to $1,000 for pre-doctoral work.

Resident Scholars-VARIOUS

Program Description

The School for Advanced Research (SAR) awards approximately six Resident Scholar Fellowships each year to scholars who have completed their research and analysis and who need time to think and write about topics important to the understanding of humankind. Resident scholars may approach their research from anthropology or from related fields such as history, sociology, art, and philosophy. Both humanistically and scientifically oriented scholars are encouraged to apply.

SAR provides Resident Scholars with low-cost housing and office space on campus, a stipend up to $40,000, library assistance, and other benefits during a nine-month tenure, from September 1 through May 31. SAR Press may consider books written by resident scholars for publication in its Resident Scholar Series.
